Goals
The MSc course in Chemical Analysis and Characterisation Techniques aims at deepening and complementing the knowledge acquired in a first cycle of training in chemistry or related fields, in the methodologies for characterisation and chemical analysis.
The first and second semesters are constituted by theoretical and practical courses in which the emphasis is on the importance of instrumental analysis for problem solving in several areas. The courses are organized to incorporate methodologies guided by the principles of reflection, creativity and innovation, enabling graduates to develop and acquire skills in order to improve work group performance, adaptation to new technologies and communication skills, within a framework of learning and training through life. In the second year the student will develop a project in which a concrete problem must be analyzed and the appropriate methodology for its resolution should be found, putting into practice the knowledge acquired. According to the legislation (Decree-Law 74/2006, Article 20), this project, here after referred to as Individual Project may consist of a scientific dissertation, an original work or in performing a professional traineeship with the elaboration of a final report.
This course intends that students:
i) Acquire an updated theoretical knowledge in several advanced methods of analysis and characterisation;
ii) Acquire a broad practical training experience in key areas of analytical and structural chemistry;
iii) Develop skills in solving various problems in analysis of natural samples in areas of major importance;
iv) Develop skills in structural determination of molecules with varying degrees of complexity by implementing appropriate structural analysis techniques;
v) Acquire skills in data analysis techniques, and also in validation and implementation of analytical methods;
vi) Develop skills to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions, both to an audience of experts and non-experts.
